C-A..........All Day

So I hired this accountant. The state charges $40 to all accountants to efile returns! I opted out and I'll just mail it in when it's done. Private citizens efiling on their own don't have to pay the surcharge. The state should be paying us money to efile, you know, saving them from excess paper and all. It looks like I'm getting a whopping $5K back this year because of all the mortgage interest I paid. That's gotta be like one whole cluster bomb they can't use to kill little kids in afghanistan.

I quickly adjusted my withholding for this year to dole out the minimum so that the federalies (and Arnlod too) can't hold any excess money interest free.

The above title is the new call and response cry of underground california hip-hop. From what I can tell, it's much more popular in nocal than socal. So, when someone yells out "C-AIEEEEEEEE" (like ice cube yellin "Westsiiiiiiiiide") you're suppossed to yell back "All Dayieeeeeeeeeeeeee". It's stupid, but all the teeny boppers are sprayin it around the tizzzown.

Last time I did it, I used HRBLOCK.com software on line, and it filed it for me online. In Califronia, you get a CSN number, like a pin, that you use for your "e-signature". You should have got it in the mail. The HRBLOCK software was like 29.99 to use. There's other programs too, and your company or credit union may have discounts on some of the software. Otherwise, check out the franchise tax board website for alternatives.

From the sound of your post I thought there might be a free government site. I used TurboTax.com last year and they charge $20 to file.

You can e-file for free in California. I don't know about the Feds. See http://www.ftb.ca.gov/online/netfile/index.html

Oh man, here's my story.

So, I used TurboTax for the first two years after moving to the States. It was pretty good, but after the spyware/boot-sector thing, I thought I'd send them a message and switch to H&R Block's TaxCut.

TaxCut SUCKS! Where Turbo Tax is like, "find the box on the form that says 12(a)", TaxCut is like, "what was your gross adjusted Section 1597.88(a) income, minus any outstanding warrants or leins?"

TurboTax: do you have any children?
TaxCut: please write your IRS "Dependant Coefficient Gamma" in the space below

Basically, TaxCut assumes you are a tax accountant, and want to e-file. TurboTax assumes you are a random human, and want to e-file.

Oh, and another thing. Apparently, if you e-file often enough, you get promoted to the second tier: phone filing. I got a letter from Cali last week, saying that if I wanted, I could just call some number and file over the telephone.

Boo-ya!!!!!

What the heck is phone-filing? You call them up and say "Yeah, you owe me, let's see, $3K this year. That's right. Thanks."
