All the major grocery chains here in Socal have locked out their employees (or they are striking) because there hasn't been a labour contract for 4 years between the 70,000 member union and the big 3 grocers. The grocers are trying to reduce health care benefits to save money, while the workers are just trying to maintain status quo.
Anyway - i tried to do my grocery shopping for the week at Ralphs on Sunday and realized I would have to cross the picket line to do it. I decided not to cross - I can always take my business to Trader Joes or Wholefoods (though more $$$) until they get this business sorted out. I've also heard stories of the picketers slashing customers tires and smashing car windows of customers who do cross, although I find that hard to believe. I did see a patron who had just exited the store in a shouting match with one of the picketers. Who needs that?
It's a good thing this didn't happen in Canada - being Thanksgiving weekend and all.
