Apparently, you can't post date checks to institutions here. Is that true in Canada too? I just got nailed with that for my proprety taxes. I post dated the 2 cheques to reflect when the actual payments were due, and would make sure I had the cash to cover at those times. Instead, they tried to post both cheques at the same time, a week before the first post date. So now I have to pay bounce fees to the bank and I'm sure LA county. All this time I thought the date meant something.
So this means there really is no point to putting the date on your cheque - as long as it has the current year, it will go through as soon as they recieve it.

Cheques, meanwhile, can be post-dated.
