ABCDs

Email: To Maneesh,

Maneesh,

Explain to me what the hell an ABCD is. And how do I defend against the
accusations.

G

Email: To G,

It stands for American Born Confused Desi. Which is kinda us, but not
really. We're less confused and Canadian-born. But basically, it's the
opposite of FOB. I'm sitting in class right now and the guys on both sides
of me are FOBs and reading the email. We all thought it was pretty funny.

Who called you that?
I don't know how you make a comeback against that. I guess to me the people
who call you that are usually accusing us of being materialistic and not
holding on to our culture. If you want to know about what I think, I don't
think I'm very materialistic, I don't even have a car. My culture is also
not Indian, it's Indo-Canadian and I have the choice to choose which parts
of both cultures I want to keep.

Maneesh

So, ABCD is a way of saying oreo, banana, or coconut, I guess. I think Maneesh is being polite. I certainly come off more confused than him. At least he speaks an indian language, and he was rought up as hindu. Me - I wasn't even taught an indian language, nor brought up with any religion. I didn't meet any Indo-canadians until university, and they were all from Mississauga, wore leather jackets and had greasy hair, trying to get into med school (except you, Vivek. And Maneesh, he's form NB). I certainly couldn't identify with them. I renounce the label ABCD. I'm Canadian, a student of all cultures, and a citizen of the world. Who likes hip-hop.
