True Story

I was hangin out with my friend Gord yesterday and he related an interesting story about an engineer he knows who wanted to go to business school.

This guy was MSEE from UCLA and had his heart set on B-School, and he particularly wanted to go to Stanford, and no where else. This guy had excellent marks, and otherwise an intelligent person. He wasn't, however, a remarkable person, or "phenomenal" in any way. Essentially, there was no way to differentiate him and any other engineer coming out of UCLA. To his credit, I guess, he realized this and knew he was on shaky ground if wanting to go to Stanford.

What did he do? He hired a Stanford B alumni to consulte on his case. He learned a lot from this fellow - especially concerning what kind of things the school looks for in admissions. And then what did he do? And I didn't believe this one - he started a club in San Diego that takes stray cats and dogs to retirment homes to spend time with the seniors. He had an elaborate web site and everything, and many people joined his cause, mostly women. He hated every minute of it. But he managed to do it for 2 years, and got himself on TV and numerous newsprint articles.

And then he got into Stanford, just like he wanted. Wow, some people, eh?
